3 Simple Full Moon Rituals to support Energetic Balance
“The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human.” — Tahereh Mafi
It is no secret that we can feel a little unhinged during a full moon as it is a very intense time energetically speaking, on top of that most of us would have felt the effects that a full moon can have directly on our sleep. This has been scientifically proven, with one study concluding that as the full moon approaches we can spend up to 30% less time in deep sleep, have lower melatonin levels and on average get 20 minutes less sleep per night.
On the flip side, many celebrated natural and cultural events are tied to full moons — often love-making and birthing and high tides influence festivals, rituals, dances and even cuisines.
We can certainly benefit from the creative forces that surge through us during the full moon by leaning into the most creative aspects of ourselves. A burst of creative energy can be nothing short of enlivening and refreshing, especially if we have laid the foundations during the new moon and done our best to ground ourselves leading up to the full moon.
It is important to demystify full moon rituals and in general release the belief that any ritual needs to be elaborate or complex—simple but with true intent can always be just as, if not more, potent.
3 Simple Full Moon Rituals to support Energetic Balance:
1. Journal
Generally the full moon can represent a time of culmination and fruition while new moons are more useful for setting the intentions we want to bloom at the full moon.
The full moon can be an incredible time to be true to ourselves about how we are feeling within our lives and to reflect on what has come to fruition, positive or negative. This is a time when you can consider the balance between action and reflection in your life. Here are some prompts we personally love to visit during a full moon:
- What gifts did the universe offer me this month?
- What can I honour the completion of during this cycle, what do I no longer need to bring with me into my new cycle?
- Can I see with more clarity now how ____ has come to be ?
- How can I best celebrate myself this month?
2. Cleanse your space
It is most important you that lean into how you are being called to express yourself creatively during this time. Sometimes we feel called to dance, put our hands into clay and make shapes or put a little more love and risk into the everyday, often more mundane things in our lives, like cooking, for example.
If you’re feeling a little unsure about how you’d like to express yourself, the best place to start is by refreshing your space, tidying your house, lighting a candle or some incense, throwing out clutter/things you no longer need to hold onto. This aids in creating a “blank canvas” in which your creative urges may become more clear. If nothing else, full moons are always a good time to release something.
3. Treat yourself with something sensual
If we’re not intentional about harnessing the magic of the full moon, we can often miss the positives of this potent time and only feel the “craziness of it.” Give yourself an oil massage, draw yourself a bath and add rose petals, buy yourself a new oil perfume and reward yourself (and delight your senses) in a sensual way, for all that you have put into motion in the lunar month just passed—remind yourself how good and special it is to be you amidst it all.
Leaning in to our internal energetic shifts and how they may come into alignment with the lunar cycles is the purpose of these simple yet potent rituals. They aid in subtly restoring our natural cycles so that we may work with the energetics of nature instead of against them, this way, as the sky becomes brighter each month we many feel a little less unhinged and a lot more enlightened.
