How to shift your energy when you’re in a funk
Winter blues got you in a funk? We can all experience periods of temporary sadness and lack of motivation from time to time, especially as women, It’s called being in a funk and is 100% normal.
While some symptoms can mirror those of depression and anxiety (of which we most definitely recommend seeking professional guidance + support), being in a funk is more of a temporary situation, moments when you are feeling heavy and unhappy, however, this generally passes with a little attention and reflection.
You might just be in a funk if you : are struggling to find motivation to get out of bed in the morning and engage in your daily routine as well as the activities that light you up and make you feel good. You feel slowed down, like you're moving in slow motion or swimming through mud. You’re oversleeping most days and are finding it challenging to do your job, etc.

Here are some of the ways we PK HQ gals have lifted ourselves up when we’ve found ourselves in a funk:

  • Firstly, allow yourself to rest without the guilt. You may be feeling overwhelmed or burned out in which case the best remedy is to rest and restore your energy levels. This is vital for regaining your vitality.
  • Gentle stretching + breath work, we know you’ve heard it before, maybe a million times, but that is because it really works! The simple but potent power that a simple stretch and deep breath can have on your physical and mental wellbeing is unmatched.
  • Journal, this one is truely non-negotiable : when we write as a way to express our thoughts and feelings, we can gain clarity, insight and perspective. We can also journal as a way to recognise all that we have to be grateful for and dream up the future, all of which can help us develop a more positive and resilient mindset.
  • Move! Lovingly push yourself to take that walk before work (it’ll be even sweeter if you invite a friend!), or put some music on and dance while you get ready for the day / do some housework. This kind of movement helps to boost and release endorphins happiness hormones alike - research has shown that exercise is an effective but often underused treatment for mild to moderate depression.
  • Reconnect with what you love. What’s your favourite thing to do? That thing that you can just absorb yourself into? I personally have a few like writing poetry or homemaking skincare remedies! Generally, when we’re in a funk these are the first things to be pushed out of our daily / weekend routine. If you find that you haven’t engaged in the activities you love the most lately - consciously create some space to reconnect with them. We promise, you won’t regret it.

Most importantly, remember that It’s normal to have some days when you feel down. But if you feel down for days at a time and you can't get motivated to do activities you normally enjoy, we recommend you see your health care provider for additional guidance + support so that you may feel your happiest more radiant self again.
